Signs and symptoms of anemia vary depending on the severity of the condition and the causes of anemia. Mild to moderate anemia may cause very mild symptoms or sometimes none at all.
However when the anemia symptoms appear, they may include:
- Fatigue
- Tired or weakness
- Headaches
- Shortness of breath
- Cold in hands and feet
- Pale
- Palpitations (irregular heartbeat)
If the anemia is severe, the symptoms may include:
- Chest pain or heart attack
- Dizziness
- Fainting
- Rapid heart beat
The signs appear because your heart must work harder to pump oxygen-rich blood throughout your body.
If the anemia is caused by excessive RBCs destruction, symptoms may also include jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or skin), enlarged spleen and tea-colored urine.
