Smoking Could Trigger Acne

smoking could trigger acneEvery doctor always suggest their patients to not smoking because smoking can cause many adverse health problems, such as cancers and cardiovascular disease. Not only that, smoking also can trigger the development of acne, a new study suggests.

Researchers at the San Gallicano Dermatological Institute in Rome conducted on 1,000 women aged 25 to 50 years to determine whether smoking plays a role in the development of acne.

Their findings showed that 42 percent of smokers had acne, while among non-smokers only 10 percent of them had acne. This study also found that those who smoked and suffered acne as a teenager were four times more likely to develop acne than adult non-smokers, as quoted from Livestrong.

Based on the findings, smoking can contribute to the non-inflammatory acne, including blackheads and closed comedones. Non-inflammatory acne usually occurs when a hair follicle that are open on the skin’s surface is blocked by the bacteria.

Smoking is known to constrict blood vessels and damages skin cells which is the first line of defense to protect the body. This condition can lead to clogging of skin pores causing pimples that led to the development of acne.

Besides the potential of causing acne, smoking can also disrupt the skin’s appearance, such as contribute to the development of wrinkles and premature aging. This is because smoking can produce free radicals, slowing the production of collagen and and starves the skin cells of essential protein needed to produce fresh and healthy looking skin. Hence, if you want to prevent yourself from acne and keep your face looking youthful, QUIT SMOKING NOW!
