What Happens To Human Body While SleepingHuman spend about one-third of their lives asleep. Sleep is not merely rest, but a process for restoration of all body organs to function properly.

What happens to your body while you’re asleep?

When sleeping, the body undergoes repair and detoxification. This also helps the body produce enough immune system to fight against infection and stay healthy.

Poor sleep patterns associated with poor health as well. Chronic sleep deprivation leads to numerous health problems like depression, high blood pressure, obesity, irritability, irregular hormone production, decreased in concentration and memory, and weakened immune system.

Here are some things that happens to the human body while sleeping:

  • Brain
    Sleep may seem to be passive and inactive state, but although the activity in the cortex – drops by about 40 % while we are in the first phase of sleep, the brain remains very active during the later stages of the night.

    A typical night’s sleep consists of five different sleep cycles, each lasting about 90 minutes. Four of the first phase of each cycle is considered as quiet sleep or non-rapid eye move-ment (NREM). The last stage called rapid eye movement (REM).

    During the first stage of sleep, brain waves are small undulations. During the second stage, these waves are interspersed with electrical signals called sleep spindles, the small bursts of activity lasting a few seconds and make the situation calm.

    In the third stage the brain waves continue to deepen into large slow waves. The larger and slower the brain wave, the deeper the sleep. At stage four, 50 percent of brain wave slowing. At this point, 40 percent of normal blood flow in the brain was transferred to the muscle to restore energy.

  • Eye
    Even close, the eye still can move during sleep. Eye movements indicate a difference stages of sleep, the most rapid movement occurs during REM sleep (rapid eye movement).
  • Digestive System
    During sleep, digestive system rate will slow down. For this reason, eating late at night is not recommended because the enzymes and stomach acid which is used to convert food into energy is not running, thus caused accumulation of calories in the body.
  • Hormone
    During our waking hours, the body burns oxygen and food to provide energy. This condition is called catabolic rate is dominated by stimulation of adrenal hormones and kortisteroid.

    But during sleep, the hormone system will switch on anabolic phase, energy conversion for improvement and growth. At this stage, the adrenaline hormone level and corticosteroids drop and the body begins producing human growth hormone (HGH), melatonin, as well as sex hormone testosterone, fertility hormones, FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone).

    HGH encourages growth, maintenance and muscles repair by used of amino acids. While melatonin is a hormone produced to help people asleep.

  • Immune System
    While you sleep, your body produces a hormone called cytokines. Cytokines are made to help immune system fight against certain diseases and infections. A cancer killer called TNF (tumor necrosis factor) is also pumped through the blood vessels during sleep. That is why enough sleep can help fight infections.
  • Blood
    Heart rate decreased between 10 and 30 beats per minute during sleep. This results in a decrease in blood pressure, which occurs in deep sleep. During rest, blood flows from the brain, relaxes the arteries and enlarged the limbs. The cells and tissues that break down to produce toxic also become less active during sleep. This gives an opportunity for damaged tissue to be rebuilt.
  • Body temperature
    At the night, the body temperature along with the adrenaline began to fall. Sweating may occur as the body’s attempt to try fight against heat loss.
  • Muscle
    Even people can change sleep position about 35 times a night, the muscles remain relaxed. This gives an opportunity for body networks to be repaired and restored.
  • Mouth
    Saliva is necessary to lubricate the mouth and to eat. However during sleep, salivary flow decreased, causing dry mouth in the morning. However, the mouth can be very active during sleep, which causes people unconsciously gritting teeth during sleep.
  • Breathing
    When asleep, the throat muscles will relax so that the throat narrowed every time breathing the air. Snoring occurs when the throat narrows and part of the air passages vibrate.
  • Skin
    During deep sleep, metabolism rates accelerated and many body cells shown increased in production and reduced damage to proteins. This is why sleep can beautify the skin.
